Experience successful architecture in Wolsfeld without barriers.

Building means shaping one's own environment, but also that of one's fellow human beings. As a built environment, architecture and townscape are important cultural and developmental features in a region. The municipality of Wolsfeld recognised this early on. It has been active as a village renewal municipality since 1984. In 2004, Wolsfeld was recognised as a priority community for village renewal in Rhineland-Palatinate. As a result, the municipality received funding for the approval of public and private measures. Over the years, far more than 50 village renewal measures have been carried out and funded in the private and public sectors, mainly in the historic centre of the village around Wolsfeld Castle.

Due to the extremely successful preservation of the local building culture, several objects have been awarded the Baukultur EIFEL prize. Due to the large number of renovated building structures "Baukultur Eifel", the Southern Eifel Nature Park has created a barrier-free comfort hiking trail in Wolsfeld that is unique in Rhineland-Palatinate: The theme trail Baukultur EIFEL. The comfort trail is certified according to the quality criteria "Travelling for All" with the result "Accessibility tested - partially barrier-free for people with walking disabilities and wheelchair users".  Reisen für Alle" is a labelling system for barrier-free tourism offers in Germany.

"The path is special because it shows guests the diversity of the building fabric in the sense of Baukultur EIFEL. The starting point of the 500-metre-long path is near the barrier-free car park at the church in Europastraße. There you will also find the new barrier-free WC, which can be opened with a Euro key. Along the way, there are steles with texts about the historically significant buildings that can be accessed by wheelchair, as well as rest areas that invite you to relax," explains Indra Schaperdoth, specialist for barrier-free tourism in the South Eifel Nature Park.

The project was funded by the cross-border INTERREG VA project "Accessibility without Borders". The funding rate is 85 percent; the Zweckverband Naturpark Südeifel acquired the funding. The project partners of the Zweckverband Naturpark Südeifel are, in close coordination, the local municipality of Wolsfeld and the Bitburger Land association municipality. Information on Baukultur EIFEL is available at www.eifel-baukultur.de
