The romantic Hamm Castle is situated on a ridge above the small village of Hamm, idyllically surrounded by forests and surrounded by the Prüm river.
The fortress, built on late medieval walls, whose predecessor was first mentioned in a document in 1052 in the possession of the Lords of Hamm, rises on an elongated mountain spur surrounded by the Prüm.
The present building, a main house surrounded by two high defensive towers, the chapel, underpinned by a late Romanesque vault, a Gothic hall, the defensive wall, which encloses the 3,000 square meter castle courtyard with outbuildings attached inside, dates mainly from the 14th century.
Hamm Castle changes its appearance depending on the weather and light, the season and the mood. Sometimes it looks like a Scottish castle, other times like a southern European palace and yet other times like what Schloss Hamm is - one of the largest medieval fortifications in the Eifel.
