Villa Otrang, around 30 minutes by car from Trier, is one of the largest and best-preserved Roman villa complexes north of the Alps. The splendidly furnished estate with its numerous mosaic floors, which adorned the approximately 66 rooms of the spacious complex, is open to visitors. As a magnificent testimony to Roman history, the villa also provides exemplary information about monument preservation and archaeological work. Built around the 1st century AD, the complex extended over an area approximately 379 meters long and 132 meters wide. Its discovery in the 19th century was followed by the securing and exploration of the surviving building fragments.
The excavation finds provide evidence of a comprehensive expansion of the villa in the middle of the 2nd century, which is associated with increasing prosperity in the region. In addition to the impressive manor house, the complex included several baths, a heating system (hypocausts) and a temple precinct. A courtyard and smaller farm buildings were also found, providing evidence of agricultural work. The Villa Otrang was inhabited until the 4th century, after which it was partially destroyed by the Franks. The floors and ground plans discovered and uncovered in the 19th century were damaged during the Second World War. A supplementary restoration of some mosaics, the heating system and the reconstruction of the south wing with viewing terrace began in the 1960s.
