The blessing of herbs on Ascension Day on August 15 is one of the oldest customs in the church year. Since the Middle Ages, bouquets of herbs have been tied and blessed during church services.
First of all: there is no fixed rule as to which plants must be included in the "Krautwisch", but there are many different local traditions. Here, the number of herbs varies between 7 and 99. What they all have in common is that the "Krautwisch" should consist of at least 7, 9 or 12 medicinal herbs and useful plants.
In the Dudeldorfer Krautwisch, we use not only herbs but also grain, which stands for "daily bread" and "thanksgiving". And as a "crowning glory", a mullein candle or a beautiful flower is placed in the bouquet. Both - herbs and flowers - are a tribute to Mary, the Mother of God.
The following wild and medicinal herbs can be used for binding:
St. John's wort, tansy, yarrow, ribwort, mugwort, chicory, lady's mantle, deadnettle, mallow, shepherd's purse, burnet, coltsfoot, nettle, horsetail, marigold, dost, camomile, bedstraw.
Herbs from the garden could be added: sage, rosemary, lovage, borage, tarragon, savory, thyme, wormwood, peppermint, lavender.
In the past, no household was complete without a herb mop. It protected people and livestock from illness, fire and misfortune. When people or animals were ill, parts were used as a tea or infusion. In the spring, the house and stables were fumigated with the herb duster. The cabbage mop was therefore not only a blessing for the house, but also a long-lasting house decoration. It was also regarded as protection against storms. During thunderstorms, a few twigs were burned in the hearth fire.
Even the "Krautwisch" from the previous year was not simply thrown away, but placed in the fire.
Prayer for the blessing of herbs
God, you are like father and mother to us,
we thank you for your creation.
In the fragrant flowers and herbs you give us joy
and give us a glimpse of your love.
Some of these plants are real medicinal herbs:
They help us to stay healthy and to become healthy in body and soul.
Bless the herbs and plants that we collect today.
They should bring us joy and be a help to us.
They should remind us of your love and help,
when we are ill or depressed.
Bless us too, so that we may bear witness to your love.
Amen.
