Alaaf and Helau! In Bitburger Land, the carnival season is one of the most important dates of the event year
Traditionally, this custom celebrates the days before Lent. Carnival, also known as Fastnacht or Fasching, is heralded in by the Kappensitzungen. The events of the year are ironically commented on and poked fun at in a colorful stage program. The dance interludes of the Funkengarden are also a must. The event is presided over by the Elferrat, which consists of 11 jesters. In many larger towns, a carnival prince is also present with a lovely princess and a court.
The actual carnival season begins on Weiberdonnerstag. On this day, all the children go from house to house dressed up and collect sweets. Women also meet in many places to storm the town hall or collect tolls from motorists.
The highlight of the fifth season are the colorful parades that pass through all the large and many small towns. Magnificent floats and clownish foot groups present current world affairs and comment on them in an exaggerated and humorous way. Parade participants in lovingly designed costumes throw sweets for the children and hand out schnapps to the adults. The big carnival parades usually take place from Sunday to Tuesday. On Ash Wednesday, the carnival hustle and bustle comes to an end and everyday life returns to the Eifel.
