The unique Malberg Castle complex consists of the so-called New House, the Old House, the Arcade Building, the brewery, and the chapel. The “Eiserne Garten” and the “Runde Garten” are also part of the castle, which is situated on a mountain spur. Malberg Castle traces its origins to a fortress first mentioned as early as 1008. Nothing remains of the medieval structure. In 1681, the Veyder family acquired the castle and, from 1708 to 1715, had it expanded into a palace in the Venetian Baroque style by Matteo Alberti, an architect from Venice. The stately rooms feature stucco ceilings and wood paneling, as well as tapestries and antique furniture. A painted wall hanging depicting hunting scenes is particularly unique. Civil wedding ceremonies can be held at the castle. The castle is not wheelchair accessible. Dogs are not permitted inside the castle.
The grounds and gardens of Malberg Castle are open to the public from Easter through November 2, Sunday through Friday, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., thanks to the efforts of the Friends of Malberg Castle.
"Iron Garden"
A beautiful French garden, the “Iron Garden” (1713/14), is located just behind the outer gate, across from the brewery dating from 1714. Its basic layout, with the fountain at the intersection of the paths, has remained unchanged from the 18th century to the present day. Originally, the “Iron Garden” at Malberg Castle served two purposes. On the one hand, it served as a recreational garden that invited visitors to take leisurely strolls; on the other hand, it was also cultivated as a kitchen garden. Vegetables and medicinal plants were grown here.
“Round Garden”
Around 1730, a garden was created in front of the new building through the construction of a retaining wall and massive earthworks. The so-called “Round Garden” is located on the southeast side of the castle grounds and borders directly on the magnificent outdoor terrace from the same period.
