Chawwerusch Theater - "Old Varieties"
‘Old Varieties’ tells the story of two women who come closer together despite different generations. Seventeen-year-old Sally has escaped from the clinic where she was treated for an eating disorder. She is a young, angry woman who struggles with life. On the country road, she randomly meets Liss, a woman in her mid-fifties; both are outsiders and border crossers, living unconventionally and uprooted. Liss temporarily takes in the younger runaway on the farm she lives on and manages alone.
Both women give each other space, live and work together on the farm, and slowly grow closer through the daily life on the farm and the harvest. The pear garden behind the house particularly fascinates Sally: old varieties grow freely and unconstrained. Excited, she calls out to Liss: “By just letting everything grow, you’ve created a magical garden.” For Liss, however, the garden has a completely different meaning. Standing between the branches with the ripe fruits, she begins to tell Sally what it’s all about. More and more buried memories come to light.
The novel ‘Old Varieties’ by Ewald Arenz was published in 2019 and became a bestseller.
