Behold a Wonder here

A small wonder of music history unfolds in the songbooks of John Dowland. Starting in 1597, the famous English composer published his Books of Songs and Ayres – works of timeless beauty that, in their masterful connection of text and music, can be compared to the songs of great composers such as Henry Purcell, C. P. E. Bach, Franz Schubert, or Johannes Brahms.

In Dowland's time, making music was not a public event but a private pleasure. "Private Musicke" – as his contemporary Martin Peerson called it – was an integral part of noble and wealthy households. People gathered in small circles, played the lute, sang, or listened to the sounds of professional musicians. Dowland's songs were conceived precisely for this intimate atmosphere: music that connects, brings people together, and becomes a shared experience. On the occasion of Dowland's 400th death anniversary, the lautten compagney BERLIN, founded in 1984 and one of the most renowned early music orchestras in the world, breathes new life into this historical tradition. The orchestra is equally appreciated by audiences as well as by the national and international press for its unusual and innovative programs.
