Bitburg
Elger Esser's name is an integral part of international contemporary art today. He is the winner of the Oskar Schlemmer Prize 2016 and his works can be seen in many internationally renowned museums, such as the Guggenheim Museum New York, the Metropolitan Museum New York, the Kunsthaus Zurich, the Center Pompidou Paris, the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus in Munich and the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart.
Elger Esser photographs in the style of 19th century historical photography and captures the tranquillity and decelerated atmosphere of landscapes, preferably rivers, forests and distant cityscapes. For the Bitburg exhibition, Elger Esser focuses on the Loire and its tributaries, the Marne and above all the Evre: In these new photographs, he follows in the literary footsteps of French writer Julien Gracq (1910 - 2007). In his book “The Narrow Waters”, he describes the river landscapes of the Evre, which stretches for almost 100 kilometers, in sensual literary sketches.
