You start your hike full of energy today: You are fully recharged with precious minerals of volcanic origin. Where do they come from? You have filled your bottle with mineral water at the Gerolstein Helenenquelle and have already enjoyed the first sip. The water comes from the depths of the Eifel and is naturally carbonated without anything being added.
You overcome the steep ascent to the Löwenburg castle ruins with ease. From here, you have a far-reaching view of the town of Gerolstein. You hike on through mystical forest. What is hiding there between the trees? It is the little Büschkapelle, idyllically built in the heart of nature. The forested path then shows you the way uphill to the mountaintop, Dietzenley, at an altitude of 618 metres. The wooden viewing tower provides a clear view of the vibrant and densely forested volcanic Eifel. You can see that you are standing on a volcano: the “cliff” below you is formed from dark basalt, a volcanic rock. Up here, you feel free and allow the refreshing wind to dance around you. After a well-earned break, you hike along the gentle rise and fall around Neroth. A brief detour brings you to the small Eifel village. A curiosity awaits you: A mouse trap museum! The world’s biggest mouse trap is in the centre of the village - you can’t miss it. Your hike then takes you into the valley of the small Kyll river and then uphill again to the next elevation. On the 652 metre high Nerother Kopf, you feel as though you are in a fairytale forest: Large, gnarled tree roots define the picture. It is particularly atmospheric here in late autumn when the colourful leaves fall to the ground. You hike through the unspoilt volcanic landscape to your destination for the day: Daun.
Marking of the tour:
The "Helenenquelle" is a source in the middle of Gerolstein, in the parc of Gerolstein!

About 2500 years ago there was a Celtic urbanisation with pastures on the Dietzenley. The Celtic urbanisation was protected by ring walls of up to 9 meters high and 4 meters wide against attacks.
During the volcanic activity around 600.000 years ago, the area around the Dietzenley was covered with volcanic rocks. These rocks are used by the Celtics to build the ring walls.
